Intro to Positive Intelligence®: What It Is and Why It Matters

When it comes to living a better life — whether that means thriving in your career, deepening your relationships, or simply feeling more at peace with yourself — most people look outside for answers. They wait for a promotion, a new opportunity, or a change in circumstances to bring fulfillment.

But here’s the truth: lasting change doesn’t begin with time, opportunity, or even talent. It begins in the mind.

And this is where Positive Intelligence (PQ®) comes in — a framework that teaches us how to recognize and shift the mental habits that hold us back, and strengthen the parts of the mind that help us grow, lead, and thrive.

In this post, I’ll introduce you to the core ideas behind Positive Intelligence, why it matters, and how it can transform the way you think, feel, and live.

What Is Positive Intelligence®?

Positive Intelligence, or PQ®, is a concept developed by Shirzad Chamine that measures how effectively your mind works for you rather than against you.

Think of it as your mental fitness score. Just as your body has muscles that can grow stronger with exercise, your mind has strengths that can be trained and developed.

At its heart, Positive Intelligence® helps you do two things:

  1. Weaken your Saboteurs — those automatic patterns of negative thinking, like the inner critic, the restless seeker, or the controller, that create stress, doubt, and self-sabotage.
  2. Strengthen your Sage — the wiser, calmer, more resilient part of your mind that allows you to see clearly, respond with empathy, and make choices aligned with your best self.

When your PQ® is high, you spend less time stuck in frustration, overthinking, or fear — and more time in clarity, confidence, and flow.

Why Positive Intelligence Matters?

We live in a world that celebrates skillset: knowledge, credentials, technical expertise. And while those things matter, they’re not enough.

How many times have you seen a talented person burn out? Or a skilled leader struggle to inspire their team? Or someone with all the right opportunities still feel unsatisfied?

That’s because success, fulfillment, and resilience are not built on skillset alone — they’re built on mindset.

Positive Intelligence matters because it addresses the root of so many challenges we face:

  • Stress and burnout caused by overactive saboteurs.
  • Conflict and miscommunication fueled by unchecked negative patterns.
  • Procrastination and self-doubt that keep us from moving forward.
  • Loss of clarity and peace of mind in the busyness of daily life.

When we raise our PQ®, we learn to quiet the saboteurs, strengthen the Sage, and create a mind that works for us, not against us.

The Science Behind PQ®

Positive Intelligence® isn’t just a nice idea — it’s grounded in neuroscience and psychology.

Here are a few key insights:

  • Neural Pathways: Every time we engage with our saboteurs (self-criticism, worry, avoidance), we strengthen those neural circuits. But when we shift to Sage responses (curiosity, empathy, creativity), we build new neural pathways that make it easier to respond positively in the future.
  • Mental Fitness Training: Just like a muscle, the brain can be trained through short, consistent exercises. PQ® practices — like mindful pauses, breathwork, and refocusing attention — literally rewire the brain for resilience and clarity.
  • Performance & Well-being: Research shows that people with higher PQ perform better under pressure, experience less stress, and report greater happiness and stronger relationships.

The science makes it clear: when you train your mind, you change your life.

How Positive Intelligence® Transforms Daily Life

Here’s what applying Positive Intelligence® can look like in real life:

  • At Work: Instead of spiraling into stress when faced with a big project, you pause, shift out of saboteur mode, and approach the challenge with clarity and focus.
  • At Home: When conflict arises with a partner or child, instead of reacting defensively, you respond with empathy and curiosity, creating space for deeper connection.
  • With Yourself: Rather than letting the inner critic dominate your thoughts, you build the habit of self-compassion, allowing you to grow from mistakes instead of being paralyzed by them.

These aren’t abstract ideas — they’re practical shifts that, with practice, become second nature.

Getting Started with Positive Intelligence®

So how can you begin building your own mental fitness?

  1. Notice Your Saboteurs. Start by observing the patterns that most often derail you. Do you judge yourself harshly? Do you avoid discomfort? Do you over-control situations? Awareness is the first step.
  2. Practice PQ® Reps. Just as you’d strengthen your muscles with regular reps at the gym, you can strengthen your mental fitness with small, daily practices — like focusing on your breath, paying close attention to a sound, or feeling the texture of an object in your hand for 10 seconds.
  3. Shift to Sage. When you catch yourself stuck in negative thinking, pause and ask: What would my wiser self see here? What’s the gift or opportunity in this situation?

Commit to Growth. Like any training, consistency matters. The more you practice, the more automatic these shifts become.
